WHAT IS ANESTHESIA?

Anesthesia refers to the loss of sensation with or without loss of consciousness.

A key skill in the training of an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon is the safe and effective administration of anesthesia. During their training, oral surgeons spend about 800 hours focused on administering various types of anesthesia, from local to general. Drs. Kail and Moore are specifically trained to use the latest techniques and monitoring equipment to ensure each patient is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Depending on a patient’s medical history and the planned surgical procedures, different anesthesia techniques may be used.

WHEN DO YOU NEED ANESTHESIA?

Anesthesia is used to prevent pain and make procedures more tolerable for patients. There are several different types of anesthesia that are used for the various procedures we perform at Kail and Moore Oral Surgery. Our doctors are trained to provide you with the appropriate and correct amount of anesthesia based on the procedure being performed

TYPES OF ANESTHESIA

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia involves injecting anesthetic, such as lidocaine, to numb the area where the procedure will be performed. It is used in almost every surgical procedure, particularly for simple extractions, biopsies, and other minor surgeries.

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide is inhaled through the nose, mixed with oxygen, to provide both sedative and analgesic effects. The patient remains conscious but relaxed and calm during the procedure. Nitrous oxide is used alongside local anesthesia. Once the procedure is complete, the effects of the gas wear off within 3-5 minutes. Patients can eat and drink normally before the procedure and have no driving restrictions afterward.

Intravenous Sedation

IV sedation involves placing an IV in a vein, typically in the back of the hand or the arm. The patient is also connected to several monitors to ensure safety during the procedure. Three providers are present throughout the procedure. Various medications can be administered, which will be discussed with the patient during the consultation and procedure. IV sedation is often used alongside local anesthesia and is suitable for most surgical procedures, especially for more complicated surgeries like the removal of impacted teeth, bone grafting, or dental implant placement.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia is administered in a hospital or outpatient surgical center. It may be necessary based on the patient’s medical history or procedure needs. An anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia, and the patient is intubated with a breathing tube while the surgeon performs the procedure. General anesthesia is used for more complex surgeries, such as orthognathic surgery, jaw reconstruction, or managing trauma or infections.

A comfortable experience is always our goal, but safety is our number one priority. We will work with you to create the most appropriate treatment plan possible.
